Get Ready to Move!

Moving to a new home is an exciting adventure, but the packing part can sometimes feel like a giant puzzle. Whether you're relocating within Boston, settling into Somerville, or finding your dream home in Brookline, a little planning goes a long way. These tips will help you pack smarter, not harder!

Start Early and Declutter

Don't wait until the last minute! Begin packing as soon as you know your moving date. The first step is to get rid of things you don't need. Go through closets, attics, and storage areas. Ask yourself:

  • Have I used this in the past year?
  • Is it broken or worn out beyond repair?
  • Does it still bring me joy or serve a purpose?

Donate, sell, or throw away anything that doesn't make the cut. Less stuff to pack means less stuff to move!

Gather Your Supplies

Before you start putting things in boxes, make sure you have all the right tools. You'll need:

  • Sturdy moving boxes in different sizes (don't overfill large boxes with heavy items!)
  • Packing tape and a dispenser
  • Bubble wrap or packing paper for fragile items
  • Markers for labeling
  • Scissors or a utility knife

You can often find free boxes at local grocery stores or buy them from moving companies.

Pack Room by Room

This is a golden rule for organized packing. Tackle one room at a time. This helps you keep items together and makes unpacking much simpler. Label each box clearly with:

  • The room it belongs to (e.g., "Kitchen," "Bedroom 1")
  • A general idea of what's inside (e.g., "Pots & Pans," "Books")
  • If it's fragile ("FRAGILE!")

When you arrive at your new place, like a charming spot in the Brookline Village / Larz Anderson Park neighborhood, movers can immediately place boxes in the correct rooms, saving you time and effort.

Special Items, Special Care

Fragile Goods:

Wrap breakable items like dishes, glasses, and decorative pieces individually. Use plenty of packing paper or bubble wrap. Place heavier items at the bottom of the box and lighter ones on top. Fill any empty spaces with crumpled paper to prevent shifting.

Clothes:

For clothes on hangers, consider wardrobe boxes. You can transfer them directly from your closet to the box, and then straight back into your new closet. For folded clothes, use suitcases or lighter boxes.

Important Documents:

Keep vital documents (passports, birth certificates, medical records, financial papers) in a separate, clearly marked box or bag that you carry with you. Do not put these in the moving truck!

The "Essentials" Box

This is one of the most important packing tips! Prepare a box with everything you'll need for the first 24-48 hours in your new home. This might include:

  • Toiletries (toilet paper, soap, toothbrushes)
  • A change of clothes for everyone
  • Basic tools (screwdriver, wrench)
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Pet food and bowls (if you have pets)
  • Chargers for your phone and other devices
  • Kid's favorite toy or comfort item

This box should travel with you, not with the movers, whether you're moving to the lively Mattapan village / Lower Mills neighborhood or another vibrant part of the city.

Moving Day Made Easy

On moving day, ensure pathways are clear. Label boxes on multiple sides so you can see what they are even when stacked. If you've packed smart, your move will be much smoother, letting you focus on settling into your wonderful new home!
